Male Reproductive Health & Sperm Quality
Research shows that poor nutrition, smoking, drinking, drugs, stress, and lack of exercise can all contribute to poor sperm quality. In addition, a man’s sperm quality begins to naturally decline in his late twenties. A comprehensive nutritional consultation should be part of a complete program to optimize sperm quality.
Sperm quality can be enhanced in several ways including through their motility, speed, count, concentration and morphology (shape and size). A weakness in any of these areas can affect the chances of conception, yet ALCAR can be helpful in a few of these areas!
Sperm Motility
Motility involves the ability of sperm to swim strongly and vigorously in one direction. Motility is critical for sperm to travel up the cervical canal, into the uterus and the fallopian tubes and, finally, penetrate the egg. In some studies using ALCAR, motility was normalized after three months of supplementation.7
Speed or Progressive Motility
Some sperm move faster in a forward direction than others. This forward movement is sometimes called speed, but among doctors and scientists, it can be more accurately called progressive motility, forward progression or rapid linear progression. There are also several different ways to classify forward movement. In studies using ALCAR, there was a greater than 61.1% improvement after four months of supplementation.6,8,13-15
Sperm Count
Sperm count refers to the number of sperm in the semen. There are over 40 million sperm in a normal ejaculate. A total count below 40 million may indicate decreased fertility. In studies using ALCAR, sperm count increased 14.7% after four months of supplementation.13
Concentration
Concentration is a measure of the number of sperm cells in a milliliter of semen. Normal concentration is at least 20 million sperm cells per milliliter of semen. In studies using ALCAR, concentration improved after four months of supplementation.15
Morphology (shape and size)
A healthy sperm cell has an oval head containing DNA or genetic material, and a center which provides energy to propel the sperm tail giving forward movement. Abnormally shaped sperm can cause infertility since they often cannot fertilize the egg.
